Make Your Own Fire Cider Kit
Fire Cider is a time-honoured herbal preparation rooted in the traditions of folk herbalism, where everyday plants, roots and herbs have long been used to support health and wellness. Herbalists have traditionally turned to warming, pungent ingredients like ginger, horseradish, garlic and cayenne during the colder months, valuing their ability to stimulate the senses, encourage digestion and bring warmth to the body.
The individual ingredients have their own long histories in herbal medicine. Ginger has traditionally been used to support digestion and ease nausea, while horseradish and garlic have been valued for their strong, pungent qualities. Cayenne adds warmth and heat, while citrus contributes brightness and naturally occurring antioxidants. Together, these ingredients create a bold, tangy herbal infusion that reflects the traditional herbalist’s approach of making use of simple, readily available plants.
We’ve made this super easy for you by preparing a kit with everything you need, minus the apple cider vinegar and optional honey. No special equipment or herbal experience required!
How to Make Your Fire Cider
Step 1: Start by grating your fresh ginger and horseradish. These warming roots give Fire Cider its distinctive kick.
Step 2: Add the cayenne pepper we’ve portioned for you. Cayenne brings the heat and gives your Fire Cider its signature fiery flavour.
Step 3: Chop your garlic, onion, lemon and orange. These ingredients add flavour, natural sweetness and a wonderful combination of citrus and savoury notes.
Step 4: Combine all the ingredients in a large, clean mason jar using the proportions we’ve provided. Pour in enough apple cider vinegar to completely cover everything. If desired, add 2 teaspoons of honey to balance the heat and acidity.
Step 5: Cover with a non-metallic lid or use a protective liner beneath a metal lid. Let your Fire Cider infuse in a cool, dark place for 3–4 weeks, shaking the jar occasionally. Keep the ingredients submerged beneath the vinegar, (do not fill the mason jar too full with ingredients).
Step 6: Once infused, strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean bottle or jar. Refrigerate your finished Fire Cider.
Step 7: Enjoy your homemade Fire Cider! Start with a teaspoon or dilute a small amount in water, adjusting to your preference.
What About Honey?
Traditional Fire Cider can be made with or without honey. Many recipes include it to soften the intense spiciness of the horseradish, ginger and cayenne, along with the sharp acidity of the apple cider vinegar.
You can add honey during preparation or stir it into your finished Fire Cider after straining.
